Kalo Jeera Ilish

Ingredients:

  • 4-6 pieces of ilish (hilsa) fish
  • 2 tablespoons kalo jeera (black cumin) seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons mustard oil
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 green chili, chopped
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing

Instructions:

  1. Wash the ilish fish pieces and pat them dry with a paper towel. Rub the fish pieces with turmeric powder and salt and keep them aside for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Heat the mustard oil in a frying pan or kadhai over medium heat.
  3. Add the kalo jeera seeds and fry for a few seconds until they start to splutter.
  4. Add the sliced onions and green chili to the pan and fry until the onions turn translucent.
  5. Add the red chili powder, coriander powder, and cumin powder to the pan and fry for another minute.
  6. Add the fish pieces to the pan and fry on both sides until they turn golden brown.
  7. Add 1/2 cup of water to the pan and let it come to a boil.
  8. Lower the heat and let the fish cook in the gravy for about 5-7 minutes until the gravy thickens and the fish is cooked through.
  9. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
