Ilish Macher Korma

Ingredients:

  • 4-6 pieces of ilish (hilsa) fish
  • 1/2 cup yogurt
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2-3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2-3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2-3 green cardamom pods
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2-3 cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing

Instructions:

  1. Wash the ilish fish pieces and pat them dry with a paper towel. Rub the fish pieces with turmeric powder and salt and keep them aside for 10-15 minutes.
  2. In a bowl, mix together yogurt, coconut milk, cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, and red chili powder. Keep it aside.
  3. Heat the vegetable oil in a frying pan or kadhai over medium heat.
  4. Add the bay leaf, green cardamom pods, cinnamon stick, and cloves to the pan and fry for a few seconds until they start to release their aroma.
  5. Add the chopped onions, minced garlic, and ginger paste to the pan and fry until the onions turn translucent.
  6. Add the yogurt and coconut milk mixture to the pan and stir well.
  7. Add the fish pieces to the pan and gently stir until the fish is well coated with the sauce.
  8. Cover the pan with a lid and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes until the fish is cooked through and the sauce has thickened.
  9. Add sugar and salt to taste and stir well.
  10. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
