Ilish Macher Bharta


  • 1 cup ilish (hilsa) fish, cooked and flaked
  • 1 large potato, boiled and mashed
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2-3 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ginger paste
  • 1 tablespoon garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2-3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing


  1. Cook the ilish fish and flake it into small pieces. Keep it aside.
  2. Boil the potato and mash it in a bowl. Keep it aside.
  3. Heat the vegetable oil in a frying pan or kadhai over medium heat.
  4. Add the chopped onions and green chilies to the pan and fry until the onions turn translucent.
  5. Add the ginger paste and garlic paste to the pan and fry for another minute.
  6. Add turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, and salt to the pan and fry for another minute.
  7. Add the flaked ilish fish to the pan and stir well.
  8. Add the mashed potatoes to the pan and mix well.
  9. Cook for a few more minutes until the mixture is well blended and heated through.
  10. Remove the pan from heat and let it cool down.
  11. Transfer the mixture to a serving bowl and garnish with coriander leaves before serving.
