Kalo Jeera Ilish
Ingredients:
- 4-6 pieces of ilish (hilsa) fish
- 2 tablespoons kalo jeera (black cumin) seeds
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons mustard oil
- 1 onion, sliced
- 1 green chili, chopped
- 1/2 cup water
- Coriander leaves for garnishing
Instructions:
- Wash the ilish fish pieces and pat them dry with a paper towel. Rub the fish pieces with turmeric powder and salt and keep them aside for 10-15 minutes.
- Heat the mustard oil in a frying pan or kadhai over medium heat.
- Add the kalo jeera seeds and fry for a few seconds until they start to splutter.
- Add the sliced onions and green chili to the pan and fry until the onions turn translucent.
- Add the red chili powder, coriander powder, and cumin powder to the pan and fry for another minute.
- Add the fish pieces to the pan and fry on both sides until they turn golden brown.
- Add 1/2 cup of water to the pan and let it come to a boil.
- Lower the heat and let the fish cook in the gravy for about 5-7 minutes until the gravy thickens and the fish is cooked through.
- Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
