Ilish Macher Matha Diye Dal

Ingredients:

  • 4-6 pieces of ilish (hilsa) fish head
  • 1 cup red lentils (masoor dal)
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2-3 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ginger paste
  • 1 tablespoon garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2-3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 cups water
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing

Instructions:

  1. Wash the ilish fish head pieces and pat them dry with a paper towel. Rub the fish head pieces with turmeric powder and salt and keep them aside for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Wash the red lentils in cold water and drain them.
  3. Heat the vegetable oil in a pressure cooker or pot over medium heat.
  4. Add the sliced onions to the pot and fry until they turn translucent.
  5. Add the green chilies, ginger paste, and garlic paste to the pot and fry for another minute.
  6. Add the turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, and salt to the pot and fry for another minute.
  7. Add the red lentils to the pot and mix well with the spices.
  8. Add 4 cups of water to the pot and stir well.
  9. Add the fish head pieces to the pot and mix gently.
  10. Cover the pressure cooker or pot and cook for 10-15 minutes until the lentils are soft and the fish head is cooked through.
  11. Once the pressure is released, open the cooker or pot and gently mix the dal.
  12. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
