Ilish Macher Matha Diye Dal
Ingredients:
- 4-6 pieces of ilish (hilsa) fish head
- 1 cup red lentils (masoor dal)
- 1 onion, sliced
- 2-3 green chilies, chopped
- 1 tablespoon ginger paste
- 1 tablespoon garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- Salt to taste
- 2-3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 4 cups water
- Coriander leaves for garnishing
Instructions:
- Wash the ilish fish head pieces and pat them dry with a paper towel. Rub the fish head pieces with turmeric powder and salt and keep them aside for 10-15 minutes.
- Wash the red lentils in cold water and drain them.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a pressure cooker or pot over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions to the pot and fry until they turn translucent.
- Add the green chilies, ginger paste, and garlic paste to the pot and fry for another minute.
- Add the turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, and salt to the pot and fry for another minute.
- Add the red lentils to the pot and mix well with the spices.
- Add 4 cups of water to the pot and stir well.
- Add the fish head pieces to the pot and mix gently.
- Cover the pressure cooker or pot and cook for 10-15 minutes until the lentils are soft and the fish head is cooked through.
- Once the pressure is released, open the cooker or pot and gently mix the dal.
- Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
